Crews contain fire sparked by unattended candle in Hunterdon County

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Firefighters contained a fire on Main Street in Flemington on Wednesday morning that was sparked by an unattended candle, according to Flemington Fire Chief Rob Schenck.

The Flemington Fire Department was dispatched around 8:50 a.m. on June 18 to 56 Main St. for a reported fire alarm activation. Upon arrival, interior crews discovered that a candle had ignited nearby combustible materials.

Firefighters from Flemington and Raritan Township, with assistance from the Flemington Police Department, the Flemington-Raritan Rescue Squad, and the fire marshal’s offices of both Flemington and Raritan Township, swiftly extinguished the flames and contained the fire to the immediate area of ignition.

Chief Schenck credited a working fire alarm system for enabling a rapid response that prevented a larger fire. He reminded the public to regularly check smoke detectors and never leave open flames unattended or near combustible materials.

Authorities urge residents to evacuate and call 911 immediately in the event of a fire.

Schenck also thanked mutual aid partners for their assistance and praised first responders for their professionalism and dedication.
