Former Flemington Borough councilman sentenced to state prison for cocaine distribution

FLEMINGTON, NJ (Hunterdon County) — Malik D. Johnston, a former councilman in Flemington Borough, has been sentenced to four years in state prison for distributing cocaine. The sentence was handed down Friday by the Honorable Christopher J. Garrenger, J.S.C., and comes with no period of parole ineligibility, according to Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson.

Johnston, also known as Pippin J. Folk, 48, of Flemington pleaded guilty in June of this year to one count of second-degree distribution of cocaine, Robeson said.

The sentencing follows a joint investigation by the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force and the Flemington Borough Police Department, Robeson said.

Johnston sold over half an ounce of cocaine and methamphetamine to an undercover officer on multiple occasions in January and February 2023 in Raritan Township. Further investigation uncovered additional narcotics in his possession, along with an intent to distribute in Flemington Borough, Robeson said.

In addition to the prison term, Johnston forfeited a motor vehicle and cash seized as illegal assets during the investigation. He also paid restitution to the Flemington Democratic Club related to a theft charge from June 2, 2023, which was dismissed as part of a global resolution of his cases, Robeson said.

During the sentencing, First Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Paravecchia emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “The public needs to hear the message that this conduct will not be tolerated… [Mr. Johnston] violated the public’s trust.”

Prosecutor Robeson echoed this sentiment, highlighting the seriousness of narcotics offenses amidst the ongoing opioid crisis. “These are not victimless crimes,” she stated. “Regardless of your standing in the community, if you sell drugs, you will be held accountable.”
