GoFundMe launched for Parsippany sanitation worker seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle

PARSIPPANY-TROY HILLS, N.J. (Morris County) — A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support a Parsippany sanitation worker who was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while on duty earlier this week.

The worker, identified in the fundraiser as Anthony Shandra, was injured Tuesday morning around 7:03 a.m. near the intersection of Vail Road and Arnold Drive, according to the Parsippany-Troy Hills Police Department.

Emergency responders, including Par-Troy EMS and police officers, arrived at the scene and provided lifesaving care. The 48-year-old Department of Public Works Recycling and Sanitation Division employee was transported to Morristown Medical Center with severe injuries to his lower extremities.

Authorities said the worker was placing trash into the rear of a stopped garbage truck when a Nissan Altima struck the back of the vehicle, pinning him between the car and the truck. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit assisted in the investigation, which remains ongoing.

Following the incident, a GoFundMe campaign organized by a coworker was created to help cover medical expenses and lost wages as the worker recovers.

“Today began like any other shift for our sanitation crew in Parsippany early morning routes, neighborhood stops, and the routine work that keeps the town running. But it quickly turned into a day none of us will forget,” the fundraiser states.

Organizers said the worker underwent surgery and is now recovering, but faces a long road ahead.

“Our coworker was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery. We are relieved to share that he is now in recovery,” the fundraiser states. “While his strength is undeniable, the road ahead will be long. Recovery will take time, and during that period he will face medical expenses, missed wages and significant challenges for himself and his family.”

The fundraiser also highlighted the risks sanitation workers face daily while performing their duties.

“This work may not always be noticed, but it is essential. Sanitation crews are out in every neighborhood, in all conditions, doing their part to keep the town clean and functioning,” the page states.

Those wishing to contribute can visit the GoFundMe campaign.

Organizers are encouraging community members to support the effort and to exercise caution around sanitation crews working along roadways.

Authorities ask anyone with information about the crash to contact the Parsippany Police Department at 973-263-4300.
