Group of House Democrats introduces Iran War Powers resolution, vote expected in late March
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A group of House Democrats, including Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, has introduced a new War Powers Resolution related to U.S. military actions involving Iran.
The resolution was introduced this week by Gottheimer and Reps. Greg Landsman of Ohio, Jim Costa and Adam Gray of California, Jared Golden of Maine, Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, Jimmy Panetta of California and Tom Suozzi of New York.
Lawmakers said the measure is intended to reaffirm Congress’ constitutional authority over war powers while allowing the United States to continue defending service members, embassies and allies from potential threats.
Because the resolution is considered privileged legislation, it can be brought to the House floor for a vote during the week of March 23.
Under the proposal, the president would be directed to end U.S. military action against Iran within 30 days unless Congress authorizes the use of military force or issues a formal declaration of war. The timeline began Feb. 28, 2026, according to the resolution.
The measure would also prohibit the deployment of U.S. ground troops without explicit congressional authorization, except for search and rescue missions and intelligence-related activities.
The resolution states that it preserves the United States’ ability to defend itself, as well as its armed forces, embassies and allied nations from imminent threats. It also calls on the administration to regularly brief members of Congress and relevant committees on the objectives and status of any major military operations.
