Hunterdon County shredding event disposes of nearly 30,000 pounds of documents
HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — Hunterdon County residents safely disposed of nearly 30,000 pounds of confidential documents during the county’s second Ident-A-Shred event of 2026, county officials announced.
Hosted by County Clerk Mary H. Melfi and Sheriff Fred W. Brown, the event attracted 397 vehicles and resulted in approximately 29,700 pounds of sensitive documents being securely shredded and recycled.
County officials said the free program is designed to help residents protect personal information while providing a secure and environmentally responsible method for disposing of confidential records.
“Identity theft remains a concern for many individuals and families, and events like Ident-A-Shred provide residents with a safe, secure, and convenient way to dispose of sensitive documents,” said County Clerk Melfi. “I am grateful to the Sheriff’s Office, county staff, and volunteers who helped make this event another success and to the residents who continue to take advantage of this valuable public service.”
Residents were able to bring personal documents, including financial records, medical information and other materials containing confidential information, for on-site shredding at no cost.
Commissioner Director John E. Lanza praised the continued popularity of the program and thanked the County Clerk’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, county staff and volunteers for organizing the event.
“Ident-A-Shred has become one of the County’s most popular public service programs because it provides residents with a simple and secure way to dispose of sensitive documents,” said Commissioner Director Lanza. “By helping residents safely destroy personal records, the program plays an important role in reducing the risk of identity theft while also promoting responsible recycling practices.”
Officials said the nearly 30,000 pounds of paper collected demonstrates continued demand for secure document destruction services throughout the county.
“The continued success of Ident-A-Shred reflects the strong partnership between county departments working together to provide practical services that benefit our residents,” Lanza said. “We appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in making these events available to the public.”
The next Hunterdon County Ident-A-Shred event is scheduled for Sept. 19. For more information about future shredding events and other county programs, residents are encouraged to visit the Hunterdon County website.
