Hunterdon Health uses new AI technology to detect heart attack risk earlier

RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon Health is now using advanced artificial intelligence technology to help detect a patient’s risk of heart attack earlier and more accurately than ever before.

The hospital’s cardiology team is implementing the Cleerly coronary analysis, an AI-based diagnostic tool that processes images from cardiac CT exams (CCTA) to determine the presence, amount, and type of plaque in a patient’s arteries — one of the leading indicators of heart disease.

“Plaque, the underlying cause of heart disease, often goes undetected until it is too late,” said Dr. Rupen Parikh, MD, FACC, RPVI, FASNC, FASE, cardiologist and medical director of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation at Hunterdon Medical Center. “The Cleerly coronary analysis gives us a comprehensive understanding of a patient’s current state of heart disease, so we can reduce the chances of developing heart disease or provide treatment to prevent those at risk from having a heart attack.”

According to Hunterdon Health, more than half of people experience no symptoms before a cardiac event, and over 70% of those who suffer a heart attack are considered low risk by traditional testing. The Cleerly system aims to bridge that gap by providing a more detailed and individualized look at each patient’s heart health.

The technology is part of Hunterdon Health’s broader initiative to prevent, detect, and treat heart disease through innovation and personalized care.

Patients are encouraged to speak with their cardiologist about the new AI technology. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Hunterdon Cardiovascular Associates at (908) 788-1710 or visit hunterdonhealth.org for details about Hunterdon Health’s Heart and Vascular services.
