Man charged with DWI, endangering the welfare of a child in Hunterdon County crash

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – New York man is being accused of driving drunk and crashing in to concrete median with children inside, according to Clinton Township Police Chief Thomas A. DeRosa.

The crash occurred on April 14 on Route 31 South near Halstead Street in Clinton Township, DeRosa said.

While stationary at a traffic light, an officer witnessed a southbound Cadillac Escalade strike the concrete median. The officer then pulled behind the heavily damaged vehicle to assess injuries and observed several occupants, including children, exiting the vehicle, DeRosa added.

While speaking with the driver, Ramon Ernesto Tzunun Ajpacaja, 35, of Staten Island, NY, the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and observed visible signs of impairment. Standard Field Sobriety Tests were conducted but were allegedly not completed as directed, DeRosa said.

Tzunun Ajpacaja was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Subsequent Alcotest breath testing revealed his blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit. He was charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and received motor vehicle summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane, and child restraint violations.
