Morris County man accused of assaulting police officers

DENVILLE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A Morris County man is accused of assaulting police officers in Denville Township.

On Sept. 5, police were contacted by an anonymous source for a welfare check of a female. As officers were arriving on scene, police observed an individual, who was later identified as Carlos Vergne, 27, of Denville Township, with no shoes on and stumbling down the road from the residence of the original call, officials said.

After initial contact, officers observed Vergne to be impaired, in addition his hands were covered in blood. He was placed on detainment under the suspicion of being involved in a domestic violence incident, police said.

When officers requested identification, Vergne attempted to leave the scene. Officers prevented him from leaving and he was handcuffed. After doing so, he became violent and spat on an officer. Following a physical confrontation with officers, surrounding towns were notified for assistance, police said.

Vergne was then transported to St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville, police said.

Vergne was charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, throwing bodily fluid at a law enforcement officer, and obstruction of justice. He will be transported to a correctional facility following his release from St. Clare’s Hospital, police said.
