Morris County man sentenced for driving while suspended, consuming alcohol in vehicle

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A Morris County man was sentenced for driving while suspended, consuming alcohol in vehicle and other other charges, according to Acting Sussex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.

John Lafferty, 68, of Morris Plains Borough was sentenced on March 1 before the Honorable Michael C. Gaus, J.S.C. at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton, Murray said.

Lafferty was sentenced to 3 years probation and in addition to the standard terms of probation, he must serve 180 days in the Morris County Correctional Facility, complete a TASC evaluation and follow all recommendations, and refrain from consuming alcohol for the duration of probation, Murray said.

Lafferty pled guilty on Dec. 13, 2023 to third-degree driving while suspended, no insurance, unregistered vehicle, and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle. In pleading guilty, he admitted to knowingly operating a motor vehicle during a period of license suspension for a second or subsequent DWI and consuming alcohol in the vehicle, Murray said.

At sentencing, Lafferty was represented by Matthew W. Young, Esq., and the State was represented by Special Deputy Attorney General and Acting Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Brent M. Rafuse.
