Morris County Surrogate partners with veterans office to help families access benefits
MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. — As Memorial Day approaches, Morris County Surrogate Heather J. Darling announced a new partnership between the Surrogate’s Court and the Morris County Veterans Services Office aimed at assisting veterans’ families with accessing benefits.
The initiative is designed to ensure that families of deceased veterans are informed of burial and survivor benefits they may be eligible to receive. The Morris County Veterans Services Office works directly with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help residents apply for these benefits.
“We are excited about this partnership with the Morris County Surrogate’s Court to reach our veterans and survivor families,” said Jessica Tomalo, the county’s veterans service officer. “It happens all too often that veterans or their survivors learn of benefits long after eligibility, or not at all.”
Available assistance may include cemetery flags with grave markers, memorial certificates and help with applying for funeral expense reimbursements, if eligible. The office also offers information and referrals to local, state and federal resources to support the needs of veterans and their families.
“As my office serves Morris County citizens, I want to ensure that any veteran and their family that does business with my office receives the honor they have sacrificed for,” Darling said. She added that her staff will provide relevant information to survivor families to help them work with the Veterans Services Office and obtain applicable benefits.
