New Jersey State Police warn residents about phone scams targeting elderly

NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey State Police are warning residents about phone scams circulating across the state that targets individuals, particularly older adults.

According to state police, scammers may pose as government officials, law enforcement officers or representatives of financial institutions in an effort to pressure victims into handing over money or valuables.

Authorities said the callers may demand that victims transfer funds or arrange to meet with couriers to deliver items such as cash, cryptocurrency, gold or other valuables.

Police said residents should be cautious when receiving unexpected phone calls requesting money or personal information.

Officials advised the public to follow several precautions to avoid becoming victims of scams. Residents are reminded that if a situation appears suspicious, it should be treated with caution.

“If it seems like a scam, it probably is,” the New Jersey State Police advised.

Authorities also cautioned residents never to provide personal or financial information to unknown callers.

State police emphasized that legitimate government agencies will not demand payment over the phone, and requests involving wire transfers, cryptocurrency, gold bars or cash should be treated as red flags.

Officials also recommend that individuals speak with a trusted family member or their bank before sending money in response to an unexpected request.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to report it to their local police department.
