NJ Department of Education releases resources to help schools use Artificial Intelligence for teaching, learning

NEW JERSEY – Responding to Governor Phil Murphy’s call for an “Artificial Intelligence Moonshot” to establish New Jersey as a pioneering state for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered innovations, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) Wednesday announced it is providing school districts with resources to help educators understand, prepare for, implement, and manage AI in the school setting.

The resources are designed to not only help school districts responsibly and effectively integrate AI in the classroom, but also to use groundbreaking technology for administrative functions. The NJDOE’s guidance helps put into context how AI can be used and how it can be integrated into the educational environment to better support teaching and learning.

“AI is a transformative technology that will open new opportunities for teaching and learning. Our goal is to ensure students have the knowledge and skills in working with AI to help prepare them for success in the classroom and beyond graduation,” said Kevin Dehmer, Acting Commissioner of Education. “We want to help schools ensure that every student is adept at navigating the ever-increasing presence of AI.”

The resources that the NJDOE is releasing include an Artificial Intelligence webpage, which presents an overview of AI and AI concepts, high-level considerations for school leaders and educators, as well as resources for educators and educational stakeholders regarding AI in education. The NJDOE is also releasing a prerecorded Technical Assistance Webinar, designed to be viewed by any educational stakeholder, which also provides an overview of AI.

The Artificial Intelligence webpage will be updated regularly as AI continues to evolve.

Moving forward, the NJDOE’s Office of Innovation staff will meet with educators in the field to obtain feedback, learn how AI is being used, and discover existing needs, which will inform upcoming guidance, resources, and professional development.

In addition, the NJDOE will continue to participate in the Teach AI initiative, a consortium of various U.S. state departments of education and international education agencies that works collaboratively to establish frameworks for AI policy and for creating resources to promote teaching with, and about, AI in the classroom.
