NJ Transit adds holiday service, offers free rides for children and New Year’s travel options

NEW JERSEY — NJ Transit is offering expanded service, fare discounts and special schedules this holiday season to give customers more travel options for family gatherings, special events and New Year’s celebrations.

For the month of December, NJ Transit has been offering its SuperSaver fare, which allows up to two children ages 11 and younger to ride free with each fare-paying adult. The promotion remains in effect through 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5.

The agency is also offering seasonal deals and discounts through the NJ Transit mobile app, including buy-one-get-one promotions and discounted travel to Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Details are available at njtransit.com/holiday.

Rail service will operate on modified weekday schedules on Dec. 29, 30 and 31, as well as Jan. 2, 2026. On those days, some morning peak-period trains on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line will be canceled, with additional late-morning trains added. After midnight, extra late-night trains will operate on all rail lines except the Atlantic City Line, with departures from Penn Station New York, Hoboken and Trenton and connecting service through early New Year’s Day. After 6:30 a.m. Jan. 1, trains will operate on a weekend or major holiday schedule.

Bus and light rail service will also operate on adjusted schedules around the holiday, with additional overnight service on select bus routes serving the Port Authority Bus Terminal and regular weekday light rail schedules on New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day, most bus lines will operate on Saturday or Sunday schedules, while light rail lines will follow holiday schedules.

The policy will be strictly enforced, with increased police presence across the system. Alcohol and all other beverages are prohibited on NJ Transit buses at all times.
