Officials proposing all-way stop at intersection of deadly crash in Hunterdon County

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – At the formal request of Franklin Township to enhance roadway safety at the intersection of Route 617 (Sydney Road), Hogback Road, and Lower Landsdown Road the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners are taking action to install an all-way stop.

The intersection was the site of a crash on Aug. 22 where passenger, Sophia Detorres, 16, of Franklin Township, died and three other passengers and one driver sustained serious injuries.

After careful consideration by the Hunterdon County Engineer, a recommendation was made to implement a new traffic pattern to include an all-way stop at the intersection with an objective to create a safer road environment for drivers of all ages at this intersection.

A Resolution outlining the proposed changes to this intersection is anticipated to be on the County Commissioner’s Agenda for Sept. 3.

The recommendation is being made using criteria for installing all-way stops contained in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices as well as multiple engineering factors including sight distances, crash data, and the average age and respective driving experience of individuals involved in accidents at this location were evaluated by the Hunterdon County Engineer.

“The loss of such a young life is a tragedy that affects our entire community. Our goal is to create a safer environment for all road users, especially our young drivers who frequently use this intersection,” said Commissioner Director Jeff Kuhl.
