UPDATE: Teen ID’d as victim in fatal multi-vehicle crash in Hunterdon County

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Authorities in Hunterdon County have identified the victim of a fatal crash on Thursday as a 16-year-old girl.

On Aug. 22, at around 7:30 a.m., police responded to the scene of a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Hogback Road, Route 617 and Lower Lansdown Road in Franklin Township, according to the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s office.

One passenger, Sophia Detorres of Franklin Township, died at the scene. Three passengers and one driver sustained serious injuries and were taken to area hospitals, three have been released and the other is in critical but stable condition. One driver was treated at the scene and released, officials said.

According to a GoFundMe page, Sophia and her brother George were on their way to their first day of high school when they were struck by another vehicle at the intersection. Her brother was airlifted to an area hospital. He is currently stable and expected to recover.

So far as of Saturday morning, the GoFundMe has raised nearly $64,000. The intended goal of the fundraiser is $100,000. If you would like to donate, click here.

“The Hunterdon County Commissioner Board extends its thoughts and prayers to the DeTorres Family and everyone else who was involved in yesterday’s tragic automobile accident in Franklin Township. There are no words that can truly begin to encompass the sense of loss and shock within our community but know that our hearts go out to every person who has been affected by this tragedy including the dedicated first responders who delivered care at the scene of the crash. While we do not know all the specifics of the accident, and the investigation is ongoing, we have directed the County Engineer to work with Franklin Township to identify potential safety improvements,” the Hunterdon County Commissioner Board said in a statement.
