Officials release identity of man who died in Warren County house fire

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ (Warren County) – Authorities have released the identity of the man who died in a house fire in Phillipsburg early Sunday morning.

On June 18, at around 6:19 a.m. first responders were dispatched to 134 Mercer Street for an active structure fire. On scene, it was discovered that two individuals were still inside, according to the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.

A 53-year-old woman was rescued from the second floor and transported to St. Luke’s Warren for medical attention, authorities said.

Peace Mazelis, 32, of Phillipsburg was located on the first floor and transported to St. Luke’s Warren where he died on June 19. The cause of death was smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, prosecutor’s office said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the fire began in a first floor bedroom. The cause of the fire is undetermined, however, the source is thought to be electrical in nature at this time, authorities said.

The fire remains under investigation but does not appear suspicious, prosecutor’s office said.
