One person extricated after three-car crash in Sussex County

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — One person was rescued Tuesday morning after a three-car crash that left a driver trapped inside their vehicle, authorities said.

The Newton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched around 7:25 a.m. to the intersection of Woodside Avenue (Route 206) and Bristol Glen Drive for a report of a motor vehicle accident with entrapment, according to fire officials.

Crews arrived to find three vehicles involved and two people injured. One individual was still inside a vehicle but was able to get out on their own, officials said. The second remained trapped.

Although firefighters initially believed they could access the trapped driver without tools, they determined hydraulic extrication equipment was needed. Firefighters used the tools to remove the driver’s-side door and safely free the patient.

The individual was turned over to basic life support personnel from the Newton First Aid Squad and advanced life support from St. Clare’s for evaluation and treatment.

Fire crews remained on scene until all vehicles were towed. The operation lasted just under an hour. The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately known.
