Overnight lane closures on Route 23 in Kinnelon for traffic shift as bridge replacement project advances

KINNELON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — A single lane in each direction on Route 23 is scheduled to be closed overnight Friday as part of the ongoing Route 23 Bridge replacement project over the Pequannock River and Hamburg Turnpike in Kinnelon, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The closures will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, July 25, and continue until 6 a.m. Saturday, July 26, to allow crews to restripe the roadway and implement a traffic shift. The work will affect Route 23 northbound and southbound between just before the bridge and approximately High Crest Drive. At least one lane will remain open in each direction during the overnight work.

The ramp from Hamburg Turnpike/County Route 694 onto Route 23 northbound will stay open, though a temporary stop sign will be placed at the ramp’s end.

By 6 a.m. Saturday, both northbound and southbound traffic on Route 23 will be shifted to the right, with vehicles using the shoulder as a travel lane. The left lane in each direction will be closed to establish a center work zone for the removal and reconstruction of the median barrier.

The traffic shift is part of a $78.2 million federally funded project to replace the Route 23 bridge over the Pequannock River, Hamburg Turnpike, and railroad tracks. The project, which spans mileposts 16.6 to 17.2 near the border of West Milford (Passaic County), Butler, and Kinnelon (Morris County), also includes drainage and utility improvements.

Completion of the project is expected in fall 2028. Weather or other unforeseen factors may impact the scheduled work. Motorists are advised to check 511nj.org for real-time traffic updates and construction information.
