Phone scam impersonating sheriff’s officers resurfaces in Morris County

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ – The Morris County Sheriff’s Office is warning the Morris County community, that once again, telephone scams have resurfaced in which callers are identifying themselves as officers with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office.

These individuals are utilizing actual officer’s names during these interactions with the public, authorities said.

The scammers are posing as officers who are seeking personal information and requesting fines be paid via Green Dot Moneypak cards, Coinstar digital transfers, Zelle money transfers, civil process fees, overdue IRS payments, and non-appearance for jury duty, authorities said.

The scammers will often ask the victim not to contact anyone and indicate it needs to be confidential or else they will be arrested. They will then direct the victim to a local store (CVS, Stop and Shop, Walgreens) with Kiosks to complete the transactions, officials said.

If you are contacted by an officer and believe it may be a scam, contact your local police department, authorities said.

“Do not pay money until the information is verified,” officials said.

All agency information and contacts can be accessed and verified through the Morris County Sheriff’s Office website at www.morriscountynj.gov/Departments/Sheriff.
