Route 31 south lane closure begins Friday afternoon in Clinton as pavement project advances

CLINTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The left lane on Route 31 southbound is scheduled to close Friday afternoon as part of an ongoing pavement reconstruction project in Clinton, Hunterdon County, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

Beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 27, traffic on Route 31 southbound will be shifted onto the newly reconstructed right lane between Grayrock Road and Country Club Drive/Walnut Pond Road. The left lane will be closed to allow for full-depth reconstruction. The Route 31 southbound ramp to I-78 eastbound will remain open throughout the work.

This traffic pattern is expected to remain in effect until early fall, NJDOT said.

The $24.8 million federally funded Route 31 project includes full-depth asphalt replacement of deteriorated concrete pavement between I-78/Route 22 and Grayrock Road. Additional improvements include realignment of the Center Street eastbound intersection to improve visibility, an extended acceleration lane from I-78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound, drainage upgrades, guiderail replacement, lighting and signage installation, and bridge deck repairs.

The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026. NJDOT advises motorists to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel and construction updates, and notes that the schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
