Route 31 southbound ramps to and from Center Street to close in Clinton
CLINTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Ramps connecting Route 31 southbound and Center Street in Clinton will be closed for about a week as part of a roadway reconstruction project, state transportation officials said.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation said the Route 31 southbound ramp to Center Street and the Center Street ramp to Route 31 southbound are scheduled to close at 1 p.m. Friday, April 17, and remain closed until 11:30 p.m. Friday, April 24.
The closures are necessary for roadway and ramp reconstruction tied to the ongoing Route 31 improvement project.
During the closures, detours will direct motorists to use Grayrock Road to access Center Street or Route 31 southbound.
Officials said the Clinton Park & Ride lot will remain open, with flaggers controlling access, and access to nearby banks will be maintained.
The work is part of a $24.8 million federally funded project to reconstruct pavement along Route 31 between Interstate 78/Route 22 and Grayrock Road. The project includes replacing deteriorated concrete pavement, improving drainage, upgrading guiderails and lighting, and making bridge repairs.
Transportation officials said the project will also realign the intersection of Center Street and Route 31 southbound to improve visibility and extend an acceleration lane to ease merging traffic.
Construction is expected to continue through fall 2026. Officials noted that schedules are subject to change due to weather or other factors and advised motorists to check 511NJ for updates.
