StubHub to refund $10 million after FTC finds deceptive ticket pricing practices

StubHub will pay $10 million to consumers as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations the company misled customers about ticket prices.

The FTC said the ticket resale platform failed to clearly disclose the full cost of tickets, including mandatory fees, in violation of federal rules requiring upfront price transparency.

“The Commission’s Fees Rule makes it very clear that the total price of live-event tickets must be disclosed up-front to enable consumers to make fully informed purchasing decisions,” said Christopher Mufarrige, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “Price transparency is essential to a free and competitive marketplace. Today’s settlement underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that consumers pay the price they are promised.”

According to the FTC, StubHub displayed ticket prices without including required fees across multiple stages of the purchasing process, including listings for high-demand events such as National Football League games.

The agency said the violations occurred after the Fees Rule took effect May 12, 2025, which requires businesses to clearly and prominently show the total price consumers must pay.

Under the settlement, StubHub must provide refunds to eligible customers who purchased tickets between May 12 and May 14, 2025. The company is also prohibited from misrepresenting prices, fees, or other key transaction details moving forward.

The order requires StubHub to clearly disclose total ticket prices in all advertisements and purchasing steps and to ensure that any additional fees are explained before a customer agrees to pay.

The FTC filed the complaint and proposed settlement in federal court in New York.
