Suspected drunk FedEx driver arrested after crashing truck into utility pole in Hackettstown, police say

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – A FedEx driver is accused of driving under the influence after crashing his truck into a utility pole in Hackettstown on Tuesday afternoon.

The truck crashed into the pole at around 2:59 p.m. at the intersection of Route 46 (Main Street) and Valentine Street, police said.

According to police, officers were on a motor vehicle stop in front of 100 Main Street, near the intersection of Main Street and Valentine Street, when the officers heard a loud crashing sound and observed a FedEx delivery truck had crashed into a utility pole at that intersection.

A police investigation revealed that the driver, who was identified as David B. Fiallos, 46, of Long Valley, was traveling Route 46 westbound when he allegedly dropped his cellphone which he was using to locate an address. While attempting to reach down and pick it back up, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said

Officers allegedly located inside the FedEx truck a Yeti cup containing suspected pink lemonade mixed with vodka, police said.

Fiallos was arrested and later provided breath samples. He was found to have a .12% BAC, which is 1.5 times legal limit of .08% BAC in New Jersey, police said.

Fiallos was charged with driving while intoxicated, using a handheld device while driving, reckless driving, failure to observe traffic lanes, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and failure to wear seatbelt. Fiallos was released pending a court appearance.

“We are grateful there were no serious injuries in this incident, and we are cooperating with local authorities. We can confirm the driver is suspended pending the outcome of the investigation,” a spokesperson for FedEx told RNJ.

The crash caused more than 800 Jersey Central Power & Light customers to lose power. Route 46 was closed between High Street and West Stiger Street for several hours as Jersey Central Power & Light replaced the utility pole, police said.

Assisting at the scene was the Hackettstown Fire Department, Hackettstown Fire Police, Hackettstown Office of Emergency Management, Hackettstown First Aid & Rescue Squad, Hackettstown Department of Public Works, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
