Sussex County health officials investigate gastrointestinal illness outbreak

SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — The Sussex County Division of Health is investigating a gastrointestinal illness outbreak in the community after multiple individuals reported becoming sick around Jan. 30, officials said.

Health officials said cases were reported directly by affected individuals. Symptoms typically began one to two days after exposure and included vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, chills, nausea and fever.

Most people who reported symptoms recovered within one to three days, according to the health department.

At this time, officials said they have not identified a specific restaurant, food item or meal linking all of the reported cases. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine a possible source of the illness.

The health department said it is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Public health and community safety remain top priorities, officials said, and residents are encouraged to remain aware of symptoms and practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing, to help reduce the spread of illness.
