Sussex County man accused of stealing multiple pairs of skis from Mount Peter Ski Area in NY

WARWICK, N.Y. (Orange County) — A Sussex County man has been arrested in New York in connection with the theft of multiple pairs of skis from Mount Peter Ski Area in Warwick, police said.

The Town of Warwick Police Department said officers responded Feb. 11 at about 7:53 p.m. to a report of several sets of skis stolen from the ski area. At the time of the incident, several schools from Bergen County, New Jersey, were at the ski center for a scheduled ski meet.

Police said members of the patrol and detective divisions immediately launched an investigation. The estimated value of the stolen skis was between $4,000 and $7,000.

After reviewing surveillance footage and conducting witness interviews, detectives identified a suspect. On Tuesday, Kevin R. Malkin, 39, of Hopatcong Borough, was arrested at the Warwick Police Department and charged with third-degree grand larceny, a Class D felony under New York law, authorities said.

Investigators determined that Malkin was serving as an official at the ski event and was also a representative of Atomic Skis, the same brand as the skis reported stolen. Police said he was not an employee of Mount Peter Ski Area.

Mount Peter Ski Area management assisted investigators by providing access to video surveillance and other information that contributed to the arrest, police said.

Malkin was processed and released in accordance with New York state bail reform laws. The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim or who has additional information is encouraged to contact the Warwick Police Department Detective Division at 845-986-3423.
