Sussex County man charged after attempted vehicle burglaries

FRANKLIN BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — A Sparta Township man was arrested after police said he attempted to break into several vehicles in a Franklin Borough neighborhood earlier this year.

Jassan Stoeckel, 48, was taken into custody Feb. 5 by Franklin Borough patrol officers following an investigation into attempted vehicle burglaries in the Franklin Meadows section of the borough.

Police said the incidents occurred during the early morning hours of Feb. 4, when a male suspect attempted to enter at least three vehicles along Constitution Way. Authorities said none of the vehicles were entered because they were properly secured.

During the investigation, officers reviewed surveillance footage from nearby commercial properties and tracked the suspect to the area of Walmart. Distinct clothing worn by the individual in the video helped officers identify the suspect, police said.

While conducting patrols the following morning, officers located a man matching the description in a wooded area near the Walmart store, police said. Officers intercepted the suspect and took him into custody without incident.

Stoeckel was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal attempt to commit burglary of a motor vehicle.

He was then lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance in Sussex County Superior Court under the state’s bail reform law.
