Sussex County man pleads guilty to unlawful possession of a weapon

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A Sussex County man has entered a guilty to unlawful possession of a weapon, according to Acting Sussex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.

James Tonko, 42, of Hopatcong Borough pled guilty to third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon on March 6 before the Honorable Michael C. Gaus, J.S.C. at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton, Murray said.

In pleading guilty, Tonko admitted to knowingly possessing a baseball bat, with the purpose to use it unlawfully against a person, Murray said.

Tonko is scheduled to be sentenced on April 19.

The case was investigated by Ptl. Kern of the Hopatcong Police Department.

Tonko was represented by Thomas Militano, Esq., and the State was represented by Special Deputy Attorney General and Acting Assistant Prosecutor Vanessa Henderson.
