Three Rivers Drive bridge replacement to close road in Jefferson Township for six months
JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A six-month bridge replacement project on Three Rivers Drive in Jefferson Township is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 3, requiring a full closure of the roadway to through traffic.
The closure will begin after the Monday morning rush hour as work starts on replacing the Three Rivers Drive Bridge over Weldon Brook.
Motorists will be directed along a signed detour of approximately 2.5 miles using Bowling Green Parkway, Route 15, Espanong Road and Venetian Drive.
According to Morris County, the existing single-span timber bridge was built in 1970 and has deteriorated over time. Officials said the timber bridge deck has decayed, the sidewalks have settled and portions of the foundation have experienced material loss, making replacement the most practical long-term solution.
The new bridge will feature a three-sided precast concrete frame with precast wing walls and a four-bar steel railing.
Construction is expected to take approximately six months, weather permitting.
The $1.17 million project is funded through the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Local Bridges Fund Program. CMS Construction of Plainfield was awarded the contract to complete the work.
The bridge is owned by Jefferson Township, which funded the project’s design. Morris County is overseeing construction in partnership with the township.
