UPDATE: I-80 lane and ramp closures in Morris County rescheduled to Saturday night for bridge project

MOUNT ARLINGTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — Lane and ramp closures on I-80 westbound in Mount Arlington originally scheduled for Friday night have been rescheduled to Saturday night, June 28, due to weather, as the replacement of the bridges over Howard Boulevard continues in Morris County.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, lane closures will begin at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and continue until 8 a.m. Sunday, June 29. The closures will begin just before the bridge over Howard Boulevard and extend to near milepost 32.

Construction crews will start with a single lane closure before closing a second lane. Work will begin in the left lane and shift right as the project progresses. At least one lane will remain open overnight. The closures are required to install construction barriers and restripe the roadway to implement a new traffic pattern.

By 8 a.m. Sunday, three westbound lanes on I-80 will reopen, shifted to a temporary roadway in the median. This shift will facilitate the demolition and reconstruction of the westbound bridge and is expected to remain in place until fall 2026.

Additionally, the Exit 30 ramp from I-80 westbound to Howard Boulevard, and the Howard Boulevard ramp to I-80 westbound, will be closed from 8:30 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday. Detours will be in place to guide motorists around the closures:

Detour for I-80 westbound Exit 30 to Howard Boulevard:

  • Continue westbound on I-80
  • Take Exit 27A to Route 206 southbound
  • Stay right and follow the ramp to I-80 eastbound
  • Take Exit 30 to return to Howard Boulevard

Detour for Howard Boulevard to I-80 westbound:

  • Take Route 46 westbound
  • Stay right past the Crossroads Gas Station
  • Follow signs to I-80 westbound via Lake Hopatcong/Landing ramp

The $65.4 million federally funded project will replace both the eastbound and westbound I-80 bridges over Howard Boulevard, which are in poor condition. Planned improvements include increased vertical clearance, wider shoulders, longer acceleration and deceleration lanes, and upgraded ramps.

Additional work will involve new traffic signals and lighting, ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks, and extended pedestrian access to the Mount Arlington Train Station to improve safety and mobility. The full project is expected to be completed by summer 2027.

Motorists are advised to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel and construction updates. All work is weather permitting.
