UPDATE: Morris County wildfire now 85% contained after burning 202 acres
ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) — The New Jersey Forest Fire Service announced on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. that the Craigmeur Lookout Wildfire has achieved 85% containment. The fire has burned 202 acres in the vicinity of Notch Road and Green Pond Road.
Forest Fire Service crews are expected to remain on-site for several days to enhance containment lines and address any areas of concern until significant rainfall occurs, which is necessary for public safety. While smoke from the fire is anticipated to persist until sufficient rain falls, the situation remains stable.
Initially, the wildfire posed a threat to 16 structures, prompting the evacuation of eight residences. No damage to buildings has been reported, and there have been no injuries associated with the incident. The fire’s size was initially estimated on Saturday at 211 acres; however, updated mapping has revised the affected area to 202 acres.
Local fire departments from Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Sussex, Morris, and Warren counties, provided critical structure protection. Green Pond Road has since reopened.
The cause of the wildfire is still under investigation. This incident follows an earlier wildfire in October, specifically the Microwave wildfire near Jacobs Road in Rockaway Township, which burned approximately 77 acres.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service stated that there will be no further updates regarding the Craigmeur Lookout Wildfire unless significant developments arise.
