UPDATE: Sussex County health officials seek information amid rise in gastrointestinal illness reports
SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — The Sussex County Division of Health is continuing to investigate an increase in reports of gastrointestinal illness in the community and is asking residents who experienced symptoms and dined out in the county to contact the department as the investigation continues, officials said Saturday, updating details first released Feb. 5.
Health officials said Saturday they have received additional reports of symptoms including diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, particularly from individuals who ate at restaurants in Sussex County between Jan. 30 and Feb. 1. Officials emphasized that the request for information is part of an ongoing investigation and does not confirm a source of illness.
Residents who experienced symptoms during that period and dined out are encouraged to call the Sussex County Division of Health at 973-579-0370 to share details of their dining experiences. Officials said the information may help identify potential factors and prevent further illness.
Those who did not dine out during the period or are not experiencing symptoms do not need to contact the department, officials said.
The county’s environmental health team continues to monitor the situation and is working with local food establishments as part of the investigation. Additional public health actions may be considered if reports continue to increase.
“The health and safety of our community is our top priority,” the division said in a statement.
