Volunteers honor veterans at Hunterdon County headstone cleaning in Califon
CALIFON BOROUGH, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Volunteers gathered Saturday at Fairmount Presbyterian Church cemetery in Califon for a Veterans Headstone Cleaning organized by Hunterdon County.
The Sept. 13 event ran from 10 a.m. to noon and drew community members, families, and parishioners who worked together to preserve and honor the resting places of local veterans.
Commissioner and veteran co-liaison Susan J. Soloway said, “The outpouring of support for these headstone cleanings truly reflects the spirit of Hunterdon County. These events define the values of our community – respect, service, and remembrance. It’s inspiring to see people of all ages coming together, not just to clean a headstone, but to honor the sacrifices of our veterans in a meaningful way.”
The Veteran Headstone Cleaning initiative began in Hunterdon County several years ago to ensure that every veteran’s grave is treated with dignity and respect. Organizers said the events restore the appearance of weathered headstones while also serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made by service members.
“This is about more than just cleaning headstones,” said Hunterdon County Veterans Service Officer Rich Booth. “It’s about recognizing the sacrifices made by these men and women. The turnout for this event was incredible and speaks volumes about our community’s respect for veterans.”
Fairmount Presbyterian Church parishioners provided drinks and snacks to volunteers, helping to keep attendees refreshed throughout the morning.
The final headstone cleaning of the year is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18, at Milford Union Cemetery on County Road 519 in Milford. Space is limited and registration is required.
