WalletHub: New Jersey residents spend the lowest percentage of income on groceries

NEW JERSEY – New Jersey residents spend the lowest percentage of income on groceries, according to WalletHub.

With grocery prices having risen more than 25% over the past five years, the personal-finance website WalletHub Thursday released its report on the States Where People Spend the Most & Least on Groceries to offer insight into where Americans are having the most trouble affording food.

WalletHub analyzed the prices of 26 common grocery items in each of the 50 states, then added these costs together and compared them to the median household income in order to determine where people are spending the greatest percentage of their income on groceries.

Grocery Spending in New Jersey (1=Most Expensive; 25=Avg.):

  • Average Cost of Groceries: $121.04
  • Average Cost of Groceries as % of Median Monthly Household Income: 1.50%
  • 34th – Average Price of Ground Beef
  • 23rd – Average Price of Eggs
  • 45th – Average Price of Bananas
  • 24th – Average Price of Sugar
  • 25th – Average Price of Dishwashing Detergent
