FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County Commissioner Susan Soloway and County Clerk Mary Melfi joined family, friends, and community members on Sunday, May 18, to celebrate the 100th birthday of World War II veteran Joe Pitula at a special gathering held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Flemington.

The event honored Pitula’s life of military service and community involvement. Commissioner Soloway, who serves as co-liaison for Veterans Affairs, presented an official proclamation recognizing Pitula’s milestone and contributions.

“Joe’s dedication and service reminds us of all the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation,” Soloway said. “It is an honor to celebrate his 100th birthday and pay tribute to someone who has given so much to his country and community.”

Pitula was born on May 4, 1925, in Hackensack and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of Petty Officer First Class. His military service and continued dedication to his community have earned him widespread admiration in Hunterdon County.

“Joe Pitula represents the very best of Hunterdon County,” said County Clerk Mary Melfi. “His commitment to his family, his love of music, and his enduring spirit inspires all who know him.”

Despite facing vision loss, Pitula remains active in the community through music. He is known for his harmonica playing and participation in the chorus group at the local senior center.

The Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners recognized Pitula’s centennial birthday as a celebration of a veteran, family man, and community leader who continues to leave a lasting impact.
