UPDATE: Byram Township standoff ends with suspect dead, no threat to public

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A standoff in Byram Township ended Sunday night when a barricaded individual was found dead of an apparent self‑inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Patrick J. Callahan, Acting Sussex County Prosecutor Sahil K. Kabse and Byram Township Police Chief Guy M. Mariani confirmed that officers responded to a residence on Little Paint Way at about 8 p.m. July 20 for a report of a possible domestic violence incident.

When Byram Township officers arrived, the individual refused to comply and barricaded himself inside. A gunshot was heard from within the home, prompting officers to establish a tactical position while additional units and crisis negotiators were called in.

Negotiators from Byram Township Police, the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey State Police T.E.A.M.S. Unit attempted to communicate with the individual but were unsuccessful. The T.E.A.M.S. Unit later entered the residence and found the man dead.

No other injuries were reported. Multiple agencies, including police from Stanhope, Netcong, Hopatcong, Andover, Roxbury, Mount Olive and Newton, as well as the Lakeland Emergency Squad, assisted during the response.

The Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, the New Jersey State Police Major Crimes Unit and Byram Township Police continue to investigate, but officials said there is no danger to the public.

No further information was released, and no identities were released.
