Uhlerstown-Frenchtown Bridge to reopen temporarily before daytime closures next week
FRENCHTOWN BOROUGH, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Uhlerstown-Frenchtown Toll-Supported Bridge is expected to reopen to two-way traffic by late Friday afternoon and remain open through the weekend, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) announced Tuesday.
The reopening, however, will be temporary. Beginning Monday, Oct. 20, through Friday, Oct. 24, the bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic during off-peak daytime hours — from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — to allow continued rehabilitation work. The bridge will reopen to two-way travel during morning and evening rush hours and remain open overnight.
A signed traffic detour will direct motorists to the Upper Black Eddy-Milford Toll-Supported Bridge, located about 3.3 miles upstream. Officials urged drivers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time when the Frenchtown crossing is closed.
Before the weekend reopening, crews will complete several key tasks, including installation of new protective railings on both sides of the bridge’s roadway deck. Electrical and lighting work will also be performed but is not required for the bridge to reopen to two-way traffic.
During next week’s daytime closures, workers will focus on the bridge’s approaches in Frenchtown, N.J., and Uhlerstown, Pa., installing new guide rails, replacing expansion joints, resurfacing the concrete transitions, and repaving the roadway approaches. These activities are being done during the day because of noise restrictions overnight.
The bridge has been under comprehensive rehabilitation since early 2025 and has been closed to Pennsylvania-bound traffic 24/7 since Feb. 20. The 94-year-old structure was last rehabilitated in 2001.
If weather cooperates, DRJTBC officials said all detours are expected to end by Friday afternoon, Oct. 24, with only occasional single-lane closures needed to complete final project work later this fall.
