Sussex County health officials provide update on rise in gastrointestinal illness

SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — Sussex County health officials say early findings suggest norovirus may be driving the recent increase in gastrointestinal illness cases, though laboratory testing is needed to confirm the cause.

The Sussex County Division of Health issued the update as cases continue to be reported across the county. Officials said a surge in emails and phone calls from residents describing symptoms has helped health authorities track the spread and identify common patterns of illness.

Following an investigation, the division said the outbreak appears consistent with a viral stomach illness rather than a problem linked to a specific food establishment. An environmental assessment found no issues at local food establishments.

While norovirus is considered a likely cause, officials cautioned that confirmation requires individuals to undergo testing.

Gastrointestinal illnesses occur year-round but typically peak between November and April, health officials said.

The division is urging residents to continue taking preventive measures to limit the spread.

Individuals who are sick should avoid preparing food or caring for others and should wait at least 48 hours after symptoms end before returning to work, particularly in restaurants, schools, day care centers, long-term care facilities and other public settings.

Officials also stressed the importance of washing hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus, the division said.

Clothing and linens contaminated by vomit or feces should be washed promptly using hot water and detergent and dried on the highest heat setting. Gloves should be worn when handling soiled items, and hands should be washed thoroughly afterward.
