Sussex County food pantry receives $2,500 grant from German Christmas Market

AUGUSTA, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Sussex County Division of Social Services has received a $2,500 grant to support its food pantry, county officials announced.

The funding was awarded by the German Christmas Market of New Jersey during its annual Giving Back event held March 15 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Members of the Sussex County Board of Commissioners and county officials attended the event to accept the grant.

The German Christmas Market of New Jersey is a nonprofit organization that hosts an annual holiday event and distributes proceeds through grants and donations to local charities. This year, the organization awarded more than $177,000 to 64 groups, including the Division of Social Services.

County officials said the food pantry plays a key role in supporting residents in need, serving approximately 14,000 people each year.

“Since 1932, Sussex County’s Division of Social Services has been providing public assistance and social services to the people of Sussex County. One of Social Services’ vital services is the county’s food pantry. The food pantry provides critical food supplies for people who are in need and it currently serves approximately 14,000 residents each year.” stated Commissioner Henderson, who serves as a liaison to Sussex County’s Department of Health & Human Services. “Due to the important role the food pantry plays in Sussex County, this award will further help the pantry’s efforts and allow for the pantry to continue to be a vital resource for Sussex County’s most vulnerable residents.”

“This award is deeply appreciated,” stated Deputy Director Jack DeGroot. “I cannot thank the Board of Trustees enough for their hard work and recognizing the important role the food pantry plays in helping the residents of Sussex County.”

Officials encouraged residents in need of assistance to visit the Division of Social Services food pantry at 83 Spring St. in Newton during regular business hours. Donations of food and pet supplies are also accepted.
