Sussex County Library System opens new seed library at Stanhope branch

STANHOPE BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Sussex County Library System has opened a new Seed Library at its Louise Childs Branch in Stanhope, expanding a sustainability program that allows residents to obtain free seeds for home gardening.

The new location joins the existing Seed Library at the Dorothy Henry Branch in Vernon, giving residents in Sussex County two locations where they can access vegetable, herb, fruit and flower seeds.

Library patrons are encouraged to “borrow” seeds by planting them at home and, when possible, saving seeds from their harvest to donate back to the library for future community use.

Officials said seed donations are appreciated but not required.

“Expanding our Seed Library program reflects SCLS’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, community learning, and sharing resources in meaningful ways,” Library Director Will Porter said. “In addition to our Seed Libraries, we’ve added programs like our Halloween costume and formal dress swaps that make it easier for community members to share resources, support one another, and participate in sustainable community programs. We’re excited to continue adding these popular programs throughout the county.”

The Sussex County Library System said the Seed Libraries are designed to encourage gardening, sustainability and community engagement while helping residents access fresh produce and gardening resources at no cost.

Additional information about the program, including branch hours and participation guidelines, is available through the Louise Childs Branch in Stanhope and the Dorothy Henry Branch in Vernon.
