Project Self-Sufficiency opens enrollment for youth high school equivalency program

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Enrollment is underway for the next session of the New Jersey Youth Corps program at Project Self-Sufficiency, offering teens and young adults an opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma, gain job experience and prepare for future education or careers.

The 16-week program begins in July and is designed for residents ages 16 to 25 from Sussex County, western Morris County and northern Warren County who have not completed high school.

Participants will receive literacy instruction, preparation for the high school equivalency exam, employability training, life skills workshops, counseling services and community service opportunities.

The program also offers on-the-job work experience and pathways into college, the military or careers.

As part of the training, students can earn three college credits through Sussex County Community College’s Optics Technology and Automotive Technology programs.

Graduates may also qualify for up to $5,000 toward tuition or equipment expenses for future education and training.

Project Self-Sufficiency will host several open houses for interested applicants to learn more about the program and complete enrollment applications.

Open houses are scheduled Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. on May 28, June 4, June 11 and June 18, and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. on May 29, June 5 and June 12.

The organization is also offering a $100 gift card to individuals who refer eligible young adults to the program. To qualify, referred participants must enroll, complete the two-week orientation and officially join the program.

Officials said participants may receive weekly stipends based on attendance, and free transportation is provided.

The New Jersey Youth Corps program is funded by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development and operates at locations throughout the state, including Camden, Elizabeth, Jersey City, Newark, Paterson, Phillipsburg, Pleasantville, Trenton and Vineland.
