Sussex County man sentenced to probation for unlawful rifle possession

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — A 55-year-old Andover Township man has been sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to unlawfully possessing a rifle, according to the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Sussex County Prosecutor Daniel M. Perez announced that John Southard was sentenced June 26 by Superior Court Judge Janine M. Allen at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton.

In addition to probation, Southard must submit a DNA sample and pay $280 in mandatory fines and penalties.

Southard previously pleaded guilty to third-degree unlawful possession of a rifle.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the charge stemmed from an investigation by the Andover Township Police Department.

During his guilty plea, Southard admitted to unlawfully possessing a rifle without having a firearms purchaser identification card.
