Animal control warns public after rabid skunk confirmed in Sussex County neighborhood
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Newton Animal Control has confirmed that a skunk in the area of Linwood Avenue and Clarkson Avenue in Newton tested positive for rabies, prompting officials to urge residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their pets.
Authorities advised residents not to approach wildlife, particularly skunks, raccoons and foxes, or any animal that appears sick, injured or unusually friendly. Pet owners are urged to keep animals supervised and ensure dogs and cats are up to date on rabies vaccinations.
Officials said anyone who believes they or their pet may have had contact with a skunk in the area should immediately contact a veterinarian or the local health department. Residents who observe animals behaving strangely or suspect a possible exposure are asked to call Newton Animal Control.
Rabies is fatal if untreated, officials warned, emphasizing the importance of reporting potential exposures promptly.
Animal control officials also stressed that the confirmation of one rabies-positive skunk does not mean all wildlife in the area is infected, but said continued vigilance is necessary to help keep the community safe.
