Commissioners approve contract for construction of new communications tower in Hunterdon County

BETHLEHEM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – The Hunterdon County Commissioners Tuesday approved a contract award for the construction of a communications tower in Bethlehem Township for public safety to SM Electric Group Inc., 601 New Brunswick Avenue, in Rahway, and not to exceed the amount of $1,445,000.

Commissioner John Lanza who serves as the Department of Public Safety liaison said, “This project is a significant investment in public safety and will help ensure that first responders have the tools they need to keep county residents safe. As a Board we are happy to see this project come to fruition and look forward to the benefits it will bring to the community.”

The Bethlehem tower project will add a new radio communication tower on top of Jugtown Mountain to improve radio communications for Police, Firefighters, EMS, and County Rangers in the greater Bethlehem Township, Bloomsbury, and Union Township area.

Improved radio coverage particularly along the Route 78 corridor will provide for better coordination and safety for emergency responders.

“The new tower will help eliminate existing dead spots, particularly in the rural parts of the county, and better allow first responders to communicate directly with each other from all county agencies. These are all things that are especially crucial and extremely useful in the event of an emergency,” Lanza said.
