FDA classifies recall of Utz potato chips sold in New Jersey as highest risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified an ongoing recall of several Utz Quality Foods potato chip products, including Zapp’s and Dirty Brands, as a Class I recall, the agency’s most serious recall designation, because of the potential presence of Salmonella.

The voluntary recall was initiated by Utz Quality Foods LLC of Hanover, Pennsylvania, on April 28. The FDA classified the recall on June 24.

According to the FDA, the recalled products were distributed in 35 states, including New Jersey, as well as New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and others.

The recalled products include:

  • 1.5-ounce Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch Kettle Chips (UPC: 83791272917) – 164,640 bags
  • 2.5-ounce and 8-ounce Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips (UPCs: 83791272924 and 83791272931) – 179,837 bags
  • 1.5-ounce and 2-ounce Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (UPCs: 83791520148, 26030070101 and 26036070102) – 300,595 bags
  • 2-ounce Dirty Maui Onion Chips (UPC: 26052070103) – 5,000 bags
  • 1.5-ounce and 8-ounce Zapp’s Big Cheezy Potato Chips (UPCs: 26058070104 and 26059070104) – 14,976 bags
  • 2-ounce Dirty Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips – 19,200 bags

In total, the recall affects nearly 685,000 bags of potato chips.

The FDA said the products were recalled because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The recall remains ongoing. Consumers who have the recalled products should not consume them.

More information about the recall is available on the FDA’s website.
