Garden State Surf Fishing Classic returns to Island Beach State Park on May 17
OCEAN COUNTY, N.J. — Anglers from across New Jersey and neighboring states are expected to gather Sunday at Island Beach State Park for the annual Garden State Surf Fishing Classic, one of the state’s premier recreational saltwater fishing tournaments.
The tournament, now in its 35th year, will take place May 17 in Ocean County and is open to anglers of all ages and skill levels.
Officials said the event promotes New Jersey’s recreational saltwater fishing heritage while highlighting the importance of protecting marine resources.
Registration for anglers who are not pre-registered begins at 5 a.m., with fishing scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. An awards ceremony featuring New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Shawn LaTourette Potosnak is scheduled for 2 p.m.
“The Garden State Surf Fishing Classic is a wonderful event that highlights the excellent saltwater fishing available in New Jersey,” said Acting Commissioner Potosnak. “The tournament gives anglers a chance to bond while learning more about the exciting sport of surf fishing, a cherished pastime in our state. Come join us on Sunday to reel in some lasting memories with friends and family.”
The angler who catches the longest fish will receive the Governor’s Award and have their name engraved on the Governor’s Cup, which is permanently displayed at Island Beach State Park.
Additional prizes will be awarded in several fish species and age categories. The tournament also includes divisions for military veterans and high school teams.
“We anticipate hundreds of anglers of all ages from New Jersey and neighboring states will participate and spend a fun day of fishing,” said NJDEP Fish & Wildlife Assistant Commissioner Dave Golden. “The event also provides a great opportunity to enjoy our beautiful beaches and celebrate the upcoming summer season at the Jersey shore.”
Tournament organizers said all fish entered must meet minimum length requirements. Anglers also are encouraged to use lead-free tackle and circle hooks when possible, properly dispose of fishing line and trash, and follow state fishing regulations and safe fish-handling practices.
“Everything is coming together and excitement is building for the 35th annual Garden State Surf Fishing Classic,” said Gary Conk, president of the Tournament Committee and chairman of trustees with the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association. “There was a lot of excitement with many fish caught last year, and I look forward to seeing everyone on the beach again this year enjoying a day of fishing and friendly competition.”
The registration fee on the day of the tournament is $20 for anglers 18 and older and $5 for anglers ages 13 to 17. There is no fee for children 12 and younger or student teams. Organizers said only cash or checks will be accepted for registration. Admission to Island Beach State Park is free for all tournament participants.
Officials said funds raised through the event support beach access improvements, disabled angler access ramps, surf fishing instruction programs and marine education and restoration projects.
All anglers participating in the tournament must complete the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry before arriving. Registration is free through the NJDEP Fish & Wildlife website.
The tournament is sponsored by NJDEP Fish & Wildlife, New Jersey State Parks, the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, the Jersey Coast Anglers Association and the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association.
