Homeowner uses garden hose to keep fire from spreading in Sussex County

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A homeowner used a garden hose during a Monday afternoon fire in Byram Township while firefighters were en route to prevent it from spreading further into the house, according to a post on the Byram Twp Fire Department Facebook page.

Byram Township Fire Department was dispatched to a dumpster fire, possibly extending to the house in the Brookwood section of the township, authorities said.

While responding the Sussex County Sheriffs 911 Center upgraded the call to a structure fire. On arrival, a homeowner was keeping the fire from spreading further into the house with a garden hose, the post said.

Fire crews from Netcong Fire Company No. 1 Netcong Hilltop Fire Company No. 2 Stanhope Fire Department assisted with fire suppression, authorities said.

The fire was contained to the dumpster and melted the siding on the house, the post said.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital and no other injuries were reported, authorities said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
