Hunterdon County commissioners honor community leaders, declare ‘Save A Life Day’ at annual Prevention Resources event
HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — The Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners recognized two community leaders and officially declared the fourth Thursday of September as “Save A Life Day” during Prevention Resources’ annual “Taste of Hunterdon” fundraiser on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
Commissioner Director John E. Lanza, joined by Commissioners Jeff Kuhl and Susan J. Soloway, presented three proclamations honoring Jeannine Gorman and Nick Pellitta as the 2025 recipients of the Spirit of Hunterdon Award and formally establishing the new annual county observance.
“Hunterdon County is proud to support those who are on the front lines of service, whether it’s fighting hunger, strengthening our legal and civic institutions, or addressing the opioid epidemic, we are grateful to organizations like Prevention Resources and individuals like Jeannine and Nick for showing us what true community leadership looks like,” said Director Lanza.
Held at The Center in Flemington, the event highlighted Prevention Resources’ ongoing commitment to promoting health, wellness, and harm reduction throughout the county. This year’s honorees were recognized for their dedication to serving the community and making a lasting positive impact on residents’ lives.
Jeannine Gorman, executive director of the Flemington Area Food Pantry, was honored for her work addressing food insecurity and providing essential support to vulnerable families. Her leadership and compassion have helped ensure that residents in need receive nourishment and dignity during difficult times.
Nick Pellitta, a partner at the law firm Norris McLaughlin, was recognized for his civic leadership and dedication to community betterment. Through his legal career and philanthropic involvement, Pellitta has exemplified what it means to serve both professionally and personally.
With Prevention Resources leading the local effort, the commissioners’ proclamation designates the fourth Thursday of September as Save A Life Day in Hunterdon County beginning in 2025. Karen Widico, MSW, CPS, CPRS, chief executive officer and clinical director of Prevention Resources, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the organization’s staff and board, recognizing their critical work in combating the opioid crisis through this life-saving initiative.
Last year, 1,548 doses of naloxone (Narcan) were distributed in Hunterdon County during Save A Life Day, part of a national effort to prevent opioid overdose deaths through free Narcan distribution and public education. Organizers said this year’s totals are still being collected but are expected to exceed last year’s numbers due to expanded community participation.
“Hunterdon County is fortunate to have individuals and organizations who lead with compassion and purpose,” said Director Lanza. “The work being recognized here tonight reflects the very best of our community. We are proud to honor these leaders and support their mission every step of the way.”
