Hunterdon County stars in major summer film releases, boosts film-friendly reputation
HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — The spotlight is on Hunterdon County this summer as it serves as the filming location for two major film releases, cementing its growing reputation as one of New Jersey’s — and the nation’s — most film-friendly destinations.
On Friday, June 13, “Echo Valley,” starring Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney, premiered on Apple TV+. Filmed almost entirely in Hunterdon County, the psychological thriller showcases the area’s scenic beauty and strong local support for production teams. Key locations include Plum Broke Farm in Delaware Township, with additional scenes shot in Lambertville. The cast and crew stayed at the Chimney Hill Estate Inn and frequented local spots such as the Sergeantsville Inn during filming.
Next up, “Happy Gilmore 2,” the sequel to the cult comedy classic, is set to debut on Netflix on Wednesday, July 25. The film also shot scenes in Hunterdon County, reinforcing the area’s appeal to high-profile productions.
“These projects are a testament to years of investment and planning,” said Clinton Mayor Janice Kovach, who also serves as chair of the Hunterdon County Film Commission and sits on the New Jersey State Film Commission. “From sizzle reels to site tours for location scouts, we’ve worked hard to showcase our county’s production potential.”
The Hunterdon County Department of Economic Development & Tourism manages a dedicated film commission and promotional website. With a strong focus on logistics, permitting, and hospitality, the county has created an environment that filmmakers find both cooperative and efficient.
“From permitting to on-the-ground logistics, Hunterdon County delivered,” said Commissioner Director John E. Lanza. “Our message to filmmakers has been clear: if you want to shoot here, we’ll make it work — and make it seamless.”
Officials say both productions have had a lasting economic impact and contribute to a growing production calendar. The county is on track to join Clinton and other municipalities in earning the NJ Film Ready certification, part of a statewide effort to boost New Jersey’s growing film and television industry.
With past credits including I Am Legend, As Good As It Gets, and Turbulence, Hunterdon County’s scenic landscapes — from farmland to charming main streets — are once again in the frame.
As the state’s film industry continues to thrive, Hunterdon County is positioning itself not just for cameos, but for starring roles.
