Lightning strike blamed for commercial fire that damaged Somerset County strip mall
FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — A commercial fire that damaged a strip mall on Hamilton Street in Franklin Township late Sunday night was caused by a lightning strike during severe weather that moved through the area, according to township officials.
In an update released Monday, the Franklin Township Fire Prevention Department determined the fire was accidental and resulted from a lightning strike associated with storms that passed through the township on the night of June 14.
Police were dispatched at approximately 11:49 p.m. Sunday to a reported commercial fire at a business located at 720 Hamilton St. Responding officers arrived to find an active fire.
Multiple fire departments, EMS agencies and emergency management personnel responded to the scene to assist with firefighting operations.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze, but officials said the entire strip mall was impacted by the fire.
No injuries were reported.
Hamilton Street was closed between Matilda Avenue and Baier Avenue until approximately 6:40 a.m. Monday while emergency crews worked at the scene.
“Thanks to the swift and coordinated response of our firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and mutual aid partners, this fire was brought under control without any reported injuries,” said Public Safety Director Lloyd Fredericks. “This incident highlights the dedication of the men and women who serve our community. We appreciate the efforts of all the responding agencies.”
The investigation into the fire was conducted by the Franklin Township Fire Prevention Department.
