Man charged in connection with fatal hit-and-run in Parsippany
PARSIPPANY-TROY HILLS, NJ (Morris County) – A Passaic County man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash in Parsippany-Troy Hills last month, according to Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll.
On Aug. 19, at around 9:56 p.m., the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office was notified of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle with serious injury that occurred on Route 46 westbound near Sandra Drive in Parsippany-Troy Hills, Carroll said.
A male pedestrian, who was later identified Jelson Cabrera, 35, of Trenton, had been struck by a 2021 Toyota Rav4, which fled the scene. He was transported to Morristown Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Carroll said.
A subsequent police investigation determined that Davut Batca, 31, of Wayne Township was driving his parents’ vehicle at the time of the crash, Carroll said.
Investigators determined Batca had left the United States for Turkey in the days following the crash. Upon his return to the United States, he was taken into custody in New York, Carroll said.
Batca was charged with second-degree knowingly leaving the scene of an accident under certain circumstances. He is currently lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility pending further court proceedings, Carroll said.
